The railway for Russia has been the most important infrastructure facility since its inception in the 19th century. To keep all this vast economy in order, a whole army of workers is required, who are popularly called railway workers.

What do track makers do?

Strictly speaking, who are the track fitters (waymen)? These are the people who do all the hardest and most routine work. Their main task is routine maintenance and preventive maintenance. railway tracks.

The specialty of a railwayman naturally took shape when the railway network began to actively develop in the Russian Empire. Characteristically, despite extensive mechanization, the work of the railroad worker still remains manual.

The essence of the duties of a track fitter:

    replacement of rails and sleepers;

    alteration of paths;

    rail turning;

    straightening sleepers;

    adjustment of turnout mechanisms;

    adjustment of turnout profiles;

    correction of the path on the abyss (soil raising);

    assembly of rail links on special machines of the link assembly line.

During scheduled repairs, the traveler, like a hundred years ago, wields mainly hand tools: sledgehammers, crowbars, paws for pulling out crutches. Sleepers and pieces of rail often also have to be dragged manually (where installation by cranes is not possible), or using special trolleys - moderons.

At the same time, work takes place at almost any time of the day and in any weather: in heat, in rain, in cold or snowstorm.

It is characteristic that such low-skilled work does not disappear anywhere and is still in demand among Russian Railways and its subsidiaries.

Qualification requirements for track fitters

A candidate for the railroad must first of all have good physical fitness and endurance, therefore, mainly young men apply for this position.

At the same time, qualification requirements are already secondary. Even university students often get a part-time job in traveling teams. True, they are entrusted with the most rough work: tightening and unscrewing bolts when dismantling rails, loading and unloading operations, removing debris, clearing snow from tracks, etc.

But for career growth, it’s still good to get some education. In general, this specialty is not among the most qualified.

Where to get training as a track fitter

There are many colleges in Russia that train railway construction workers. Recruitment is conducted after the end of the 9th or 11th grade. For graduates of the 9th grade, the training takes 4 years. Those who have received a complete secondary education will have to unlearn 3 years.

However, it is possible to retrain on a path fitter with a different base vocational education. There is a wide network of training centers that train such specialists.

Qualification categories of the specialty track fitter according to ETKS

At present, there are five stages of training track fitters - from 2 to 6.

Track fitter 2 rank

The least qualified person. Performs only applied auxiliary operations.

3rd grade track fitter

It can replace individual parts of the tracks (sleepers and rails), carry out drilling, service the sleeper.

Way fitter 4 digit

It performs a wide range of works from mounting/dismantling rails to replacing single parts on turnouts. Responsibilities also include maintaining the automatic blocking rail circuit in good condition, replacing the elements of the rail and sleeper grid in areas with reinforced concrete sleepers, slabs and blocks.

Level 5 track fitter

Able to carry out complex repairs, including installation and dismantling of the superstructure of the track. He can lay rails on a square and templates, is engaged in measuring and straightening the track along the track width, and is engaged in laying rails using a seamless method.

6th grade track fitter

Engaged in special complex work for the installation and dismantling of tracks, including the installation of rail transfers, measuring curved sections of the track along deflection arrows, etc.

How much does a track fitter earn in Russia

The salary of an employee directly depends on qualifications. On the initial stage without work experience, he can count on 20 thousand rubles at best.

A specialist with experience up to 3 years and the 3rd category will be offered about 25 thousand rubles. The maximum salary ceiling, which is found on job search sites, is 40 thousand rubles. However, on average, the amount fluctuates around 25 - 30 thousand.

At the same time, the employer can specify in the working conditions both a full eight-hour working day and shift work. In some cases, shift work will be indicated (if we are talking about the construction or reconstruction of tracks away from settlements).

Cons and pros of the profession of a path fitter

pros specialties:

    official employment;

    demand in the labor market;

    career growth opportunities;

    You can get a job without the right qualifications.

Minuses:

Manual and mechanized travel tools and fixtures

Hand tools are used to perform repair and track works that do not require the use of a mechanized tool or track machines. Hand tools are needed for tamping sleepers, unscrewing and screwing nuts and bolts of rail fasteners, tightening and unscrewing track screws, pulling out and driving crutches, drilling and cutting holes in rails, grinding rails and spreading rail gaps, lifting track grating, etc.

The instruction on the current maintenance of the railway track establishes a list of machines, mechanisms, equipment, instruments and tools that the divisions of track distances must be equipped with.

The list of hand tools for track facilities includes (among other things) crutch hammers, crowbars and pointed crowbars, track wrenches and socket wrenches, axes for notching sleepers, rammers, end tampers, a chamfering device, etc.

Travel wrenchdesigned for screwing and unscrewing nuts of butt rail bolts.The keys are made by stamping or forging from St5 grade steel. Working part material: heat-treated alloy steel, see figure 5.1.1.

The gap of the wrench is made along the width of the nut, on the other hand it is 1 mm larger, which allows you to work with deformed nuts (36x37; 36x41; 41x42). Weight 2.0-4.5 kg. Length 75 cm.

This profession is for strong men who know how to work with a pick and a shovel. They will not be afraid of either a storm wind, or torrential rain, or a snow blizzard.

Revenue of professionals in Russia

As for track fitters, the word "revenue" here has two meanings - "cash income" and "friendly team of railway workers."

They have the same motto as the famous Musketeers: "One for all and all for one!".

In order to correctly lay heavy sleepers and massive rails, it is necessary to work as a friendly team.

Even modern technology will not solve all the problems if the brigade of railway workers does not work as one organism.

Most wanted travelers use Krasnodar Territory – 10%.

In second place is the Leningrad region. - 7%, and the third - Sverdlovsk region. – 6%.

  • Trans-Baikal Territory - 50260 ($891);
  • Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug - 42500 ($754);
  • Republic of Sakha - 41523 ($736);

Maximum income he is paid in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug - 55,000 rubles. ($975) .

A track fitter of the 2nd category is considered a student.

He is obliged to pass the exam in the next 2 months, and get the 3rd grade.

He is paid 20 thousand rubles. ($355) per month.

A professional with the 4th category earns 40 thousand rubles. ($ 709), with advanced training to the 6th category, his earnings increase to 45,000 rubles. ($798) .

The foreman in the Moscow metro makes a profit of 75 thousand rubles. ($1330).

The salary of a track fitter of the 3rd category is 35,000 rubles.

Pay scale for railway workers

The table shows how the wages of railway workers increase depending on qualifications:

At these rates, the basic salary is calculated by multiplying the hourly rate by the time actually worked.

When summing up the results of work for the month, workers are encouraged with bonuses in such cases:

  1. There were no violations of the safe movement of trains.
  2. The tracks are in excellent condition.
  3. There are no slightest defects in the path that impair the smoothness of movement.
  4. The trains were running on schedule.
  5. There were no cases of worker injuries at work.

Travelers are interested in improving their qualifications, skills and obtaining a related specialty.

They pay extra for this:

    • fitters of the 3rd category - 12%;
    • 4th - 16%;
    • 5th - 20%;
    • 6th and above - 24% of the tariff rate.

Colleagues arrived from other countries

The hard work of Ukrainian railway workers is paid quite modestly:

  • Kirovograd region – UAH 16,500 ($575);
  • Dnepropetrovsk region. – 7280 UAH ($254);
  • Odessa - 6000 UAH ($209).

In the Minsk subway, railway workers earn $200 a month.

Their earnings in Canada start from 50 thousand dollars a year.

It is almost impossible for a native of the CIS to get a job.

You need to know two languages well - English and French and be in the society of railway workers, where you can pass qualifying exam.

If you manage to get a job, the salary is $20/hour.
