Museum "Moscow House of Photography" presents an exhibition of participants of the 15th anniversary competition for the best photo essay about Moscow "Silver Camera 2014". Like fifteen years ago, the exhibition will be held at the Manezh Central Exhibition Hall. This time, in addition to the works of the contestants for 2014, the exhibition includes a series of winners of the Grand Prix of the contest for all years. In addition, the exhibition includes a large historical section that tells how professional and non-professional photographers saw Moscow in the last century.

The idea of the contest "Silver Chamber" appeared in the late 90s, it was a unique time when every day the most seemingly incredible ideas arose and were developed, the most daring dreams and projects were realized. Creative Moscow seethed like a huge cauldron, the face of the city was rapidly changing, the faces of Muscovites were changing. The desire to record and document these changes seemed completely natural and necessary, especially since such a tradition already existed in one form or another in many European capitals. Thus, for many years, the French Department of Culture has been systematically collecting and exhibiting works of both old and modern photographic art dedicated to Paris, which, as a rule, are regularly donated to the city by the photographers themselves. The photographs are stored in the Museum contemporary art Paris, in the Historical Library of Paris, in the collection of the European House of Photography, etc.

The objectives of the competition, established by the Moscow Government and the Department of Culture of Moscow, were to create a photo chronicle of modern Moscow, as well as to support Russian photographers. Today, photojournalism or street-photography, which performs the most important role of photo archiving of modern history, is going through hard times - the state order for targeted shooting, thanks to which we have the opportunity to get acquainted with the history of Russia in the 19th-20th centuries, which was the norm until the early 80s of the last century, later finally faded away. In addition, one of the tasks was to attract non-professionals to participate in the competition, to discover new names, to captivate young people with photography and photojournalism.

The first Silver Camera competition was held in 2000. A series of photographs made in 1999-2000 were selected to participate in the competition. Like today, the competition was held in three categories: "Architecture", "Events and everyday life", "Persons". The competition has always been open, both amateurs and professionals, both schoolchildren and students, as well as masters of Russian photography, could take part in it. The Grand Prix winners are selected at a jury meeting, which includes leading photographers, build editors of reputable metropolitan media, heads of museums and galleries in Moscow.

A lot has changed over the years of the competition. From the Manege, the traditional exhibition of the Silver Camera participants moved to the Moscow House of Photography Museum, and then to the Tsarskaya Tower of the Kazan Station. Technology is advancing rapidly, opening up contemporary photographers new and new possibilities. In 2000, only one series of photographs was accepted for the competition, made with the help of digital camera– Today, more than half of the participants work with digital. The curator of the competition recalls that during the selection of series for the competition, photographers often came with backpacks full of pictures; in recent years, works for the competition are sent directly to the competition website. Participants' attention to details has noticeably increased: the level of printing, the quality of paper, etc.

Since 2000, the stars of modern photography have taken part in the competition, among them: Igor Mukhin, Boris Savelyev, Alexander Abaza, Valery Shchekoldin, Vadim Gushchin, Sergey Bermeniev, Yuri Palmin, Pavel Kassin, and others, largely thanks to the competition, the audience discovered creativity of Vladimir Mishukov, Natalia Maksimova, Vasily Popov, Eduard Ilyin, Ilya Yegorkin. The youngest participant of the competition was 10 years old, the oldest winner of the Grand Prix - Igor Makov - 75 years old.

For 15 years, the participants in the Silver Camera contest have been sensitive to the prevailing moods in society, notice all the changes taking place in the city, as evidenced by annual exhibitions. In 2012, mass protests, the historical reconstruction of the Battle of Borodino, the updated TsPKiO named after I.I. Gorky; in 2013, the focus was on the celebration of the 120th anniversary of GUM, the environmental problems of the city, the problems of loneliness and computer addiction. Reports made for the "Silver Camera 2014" tell about the reconstruction of VDNKh, holidays and festivals, the March of Peace, family values. This year, many personal, chamber stories were sent to the competition, exploring the relationship of a person with the world, analyzing the difficulties and joys that the heroes face along the way.

One of the most important prizes of the Silver Camera competition is still the Audience Choice Award (Ahmad Tea Prize). As always, each visitor of the exhibition will be able to feel like a member of the jury and choose the winners of the competition by filling out a questionnaire in the hall or by voting on the competition website www.silvercamera.ru. All photographs exhibited in the Manege have only the name of the series and a number, which will allow everyone to vote for their favorite photo essay in an absolutely impartial manner. According to the results of the voting of the audience, the winner will be determined, who will receive a prize comparable to the main prizes of the competition.

An excerpt characterizing the Silver Chamber

Apparently, the human heart is not always able to fight what it is used to, what it has believed in all its conscious life... So is the North - he could not change so easily and completely, even realizing that he was wrong. He lived for centuries, believing that he was helping people... believing that he was doing exactly what, someday, he would have to save our imperfect Earth, would have to help her finally be born... He believed in goodness and in the future, despite to the loss and pain that I could have avoided if I had opened my heart earlier...
But all of us, apparently, are imperfect - even the North. And no matter how painful disappointment is, you have to live with it, correcting some old mistakes and making new ones, without which our Earthly life would be unreal ...
– Do you have a little time for me, Sever? I would like to know what you did not have time to tell me in our last meeting. Have I bored you with my questions? If so, tell me and I'll try not to bother you. But if you agree to talk to me, you will give me a wonderful gift, because no one will tell me what you know, while I am still here on Earth...
– But what about Anna? .. Don't you prefer to spend time with her?
- I called her ... But my girl is probably sleeping, because she does not answer ... She is tired, I think. I don't want to disturb her peace. Therefore, talk to me, Sever.
He looked me in the eyes with sad understanding and quietly asked:
What do you want to know, my friend? Ask - I will try to answer you everything that worries you.
- Svetodar, Sever... What happened to him? How did the son of Radomir and Magdalena live his life on Earth?..
The North thought... Finally, taking a deep breath, as if throwing off the obsession of the past, he began his next exciting story...
- After the crucifixion and death of Radomir, Svetodar was taken to Spain by the Knights of the Temple to save him from the bloody paws of the "holy" church, which, no matter what it cost, tried to find and destroy him, since the boy was the most dangerous living witness, and also , a direct successor of the Radomir Tree of Life, which was supposed to change our world someday.
Svetodar lived and learned about his surroundings in the family of a Spanish nobleman, who was a faithful follower of the teachings of Radomir and Magdalene. They did not have their own children, to their great sadness, so the “new family” received the boy very cordially, trying to create for him the most comfortable and warm home environment. They called him Amory there (which meant dear, beloved), since it was dangerous to call Svyatodar with his real name. It sounded too unusual for someone else's hearing, and risking Svetodar's life because of this was more than unreasonable. So Svetodar for everyone else became an Amory boy, and only his friends and his family called him by his real name. And then, only when there were no strangers nearby ...
Remembering very well the death of his beloved father, and still suffering severely, Svetodar vowed in his childish heart to “remake” this cruel and ungrateful world. He vowed to devote his future life to others in order to show how passionately and selflessly he loved Life, and how fiercely he fought for Good and Light and his dead father...
Together with Svetodar, his own uncle, Radan, remained in Spain, who did not leave the boy night or day, and endlessly worried about his fragile, still unformed life.
Radan doted on his wonderful nephew! And he was endlessly frightened that one day someone would definitely track them down and cut off the valuable life of little Svetodar, who, even then, from the very first years of his existence, was destined by a harsh fate to carry the torch of Light and Knowledge to our ruthless, but so dear and familiar, Earthly world.
Eight stressful years have passed. Svetodar turned into a wonderful young man, now much more like his courageous father - Jesus-Radomir. He matured and got stronger, and in his clear blue eyes, the familiar steel hue began to appear more and more often, which once flashed so brightly in the eyes of his father.

The best photojournalists of Moscow will show the audience how they saw our city at the reporting exhibition.

The annual competition "Silver Camera" was established by the Government of Moscow in 2001 to archive national history, develop photography in Russia and support young photographers. It became the first competition among photojournalists in Russia, and from the first years of its existence, the list of its laureates was adorned with the names of already recognized classics of photography. Over time, this became a tradition, and honored masters still participate in the competition on an equal basis with beginners. Over the past years, such masters of photojournalism as Alexander Abaza, Vladimir Mishukov, Igor Mukhin, Valery Shchekoldin, Yuri Avvakumov, Vadim Gushchin, Georgy Pervov, Alexander Gronsky, Ilya Varlamov have become winners of the competition.

Over the years of the contest's existence, the situation in the world of photography has seriously changed: Russian art photographers have become full-fledged participants in the contemporary art market, which has experienced a significant upsurge during this time; fashion photography is supported by customers: the industry of advertising and glossy publications. On the contrary, photojournalism, which plays an important role in the photoarchiving of contemporary history, is now going through hard times. The number of socio-political publications that can afford the content of the photo service has been reduced to a minimum. The state order for purposeful historical photo archiving is an exception to the rule today - at the same time, it is precisely thanks to such orders that photography has preserved the image of our country at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. In this context, the competition is of particular importance - for more than a decade, the Silver Camera has been supporting photojournalists and recording the history of Moscow.

The competition is held in three categories: "Architecture", "Persons", "Events and everyday life". Photo reports from 7-15 works completed over the past two years are accepted for participation in the competition. The competition is open and free. The total prize fund of the competition is over $50,000. e. In each nomination, a Grand Prix and two awards are awarded.

One of the most important prizes is the audience award. This year, for the first time, voting will take into account the rating of photo series in social networks. As in previous years, the voting is anonymous - the names of the authors will be announced only after the awards ceremony.
