Distribution of the Internet from a 3g modem through a laptop. How to distribute mobile Internet from an Android smartphone to other devices? Allow Internet Connection Sharing

05.03.2020

If there is a small local network without the Internet and someone in this network has a 3G modem, one day the question arises how to distribute this Internet to other users in local network so that they can take advantage of this boon of civilization. The solution turns out to be not so obvious, since the manufacturer “did not provide” such an opportunity in its software.

One of the options- buy a router with support for the ability to connect a 3G modem, but practice shows that it is very rarely possible to set everything up immediately and without problems. It often happens that this router model refuses to accept our modem and you need to wait for a firmware update, or change the modem (router) in the hope that they will still “make friends”. The second disadvantage of this method is the financial cost of buying a router.

Second option- set up a proxy server on a computer with the Internet, but this option requires a good IT specialist who will understand the intricacies of the settings on the main computer and carry out large volume work on setting up the Internet on all other computers.

After wandering through the modem settings, we assumed that it should be third option and they turned out to be right. Its essence is to manually create a Remote Access Connection and connect other network users to it.

1. Find out the connection parameters

Look in the modem settings:

We see that Username: mobile, password hidden by asterisks, but we assumed that this was also “mobilie” (later it turned out that they were right); phone number: "#777"

2. Create a dial-up connection

For Windows XP

Go to the "Network Connections" folder (Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections) and click on "Create a new connection" (File -> New connection):

Select "Connect to the Internet"

Select "Set up a connection manually"

Select the item "Via normal modem"

We enter an arbitrary name, for example "MTS"

Enter the phone number for dialing (in our case, "# 777")

We enter the Username, Password and its Confirmation (in our case it is “mobilie”)

Click "Finish"

3. "Sharing" the connection

So, everything worked for us, the only thing left is to make this connection public. Now let's do what this connection was created for and what cannot be done using standard program from MTS - we will distribute the Internet to other users of the local network:

Open the properties of our connection

Go to the "Advanced" tab, check the box "Allow sharing ..." (1); two other checkboxes (2) - if you wish, click "OK" (3)

On our network card (which now distributes the Internet to the network), the IP address is automatically set to 192.168.0.1, Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

After the done manipulations, it is desirable to restart the computer.

4. Check network settings on other computers

If there are difficulties with the automatic connection of other computers, you need to check their network settings and, if necessary, manually enter on each of them: IP address - 192.168.0.X (X - a number from 2 to 255 ); Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0; Default gateway: 192.168.0.1; Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1:

1. Local area connection properties. 2. Select the line "Internet Protocol TCP/IP". 3. Button "Properties". 4. Enter the specified values: IP address: 192.168.0.X (X is a number from 2 to 255); Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0; Default gateway: 192.168.0.1; Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1. 5. Close

Now Internet access will appear on other computers on the network.

The 3G radio bandwidth is high enough to meet the needs of multiple users using a single modem. In addition, many Russian providers, including Rostelecom and Promsvyaz, are already starting to offer 4G services - such a connection allows you to transfer traffic at 100 Mbps with the prospect of speeding up to 1 Gbps. It is rational to use such a connection to several people at once, but here a difficulty arises - how exactly to distribute traffic to several devices without resorting to expensive and inefficient solutions? It is logical to assume that Wi-Fi should be used - in this case, the user will have several options for organizing a high-speed network with the ability to access the Internet. We will tell you how to set up and share Wi-Fi from a modem in order to get the most out of your radio connection.

It turns out that the modem can distribute Wi-Fi no worse than a router

Universal Solutions

First of all, you can purchase a combo modem with a built-in Wi-Fi router. Setting it up will take a minimum of time, because in the web client all the parameters will be displayed in an organized form. Combo devices can use not only the above wireless connection, but also ADSL communication, which requires a cable connection. Similar modems are offered to be purchased by Promsvyaz and Rostelecom, as well as other providers - when working with them, you will not need to configure the device. If you need to connect via 3G, and not ADSL, you should give preference to a device in the form of a flash drive with a USB connector.

To distribute wireless Internet to several devices, you can purchase a mobile router, which has long been offered by providers such as Promsvyaz and Rostelecom. Of course, it will not be able to work with ADSL, but you will get a stable connection even far from the city - the device is equipped with a battery and does not require access to a power outlet. If you are interested in the ability to switch between ADSL and 3G, you should purchase a Wi-Fi router with a USB connector. A modem can be attached to it, which must first be configured when connecting to a computer.

Non-standard options

Using a modem connected to a laptop, you can distribute data without a router at all. In Windows 7 and older, it is possible to organize a wireless network through the command line. However, it is always more convenient to use special applications, such as Virtual Router Manager. The only condition is that only original drivers for wireless modules must be installed on the computer.

You can distribute traffic via Wi-Fi without a radio modem at all - for this you need a modern smartphone or tablet. The following models are capable of performing the function of a router:

  • iPhone 5 and later;
  • iPad Air;
  • Samsung Galaxy S4;
  • HTC M8-M9.

Setting up the distribution is quite simple - you just need to enable the appropriate option in the wireless settings, as well as set the SSID and your password. To connect, you need an operator card, such as Promsvyaz, with 3G support.

Convenient connection

Distributing traffic received via wireless communication is very simple. To do this, you can purchase a combined device that works simultaneously in 3G / 4G networks and creates a Wi-Fi connection available for mobile devices. At the same time, such a router can be not only stationary, but also portable, equipped with a battery. Also, a Wi-Fi connection can be organized without a router, using a standard laptop network adapter for this. Finally, the function of a universal device that receives 3G traffic and distributes it among several consumers can be performed by a modern smartphone or tablet.

Also, on your laptop (or), there should be a . And the wireless network should work.

Copy (or type) this command:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow

And paste it into the command line.

Click Enter to execute the command. The following result will appear:

Everything, the window can be closed. With this command, we have allowed the use of the network. If this is not done, then later, in the VirtualRouter Plus program, most likely the error “ “ will simply appear, and nothing will work.

Allow Internet Connection Sharing

Your modem connection should be disabled.

Go to network connection management: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections.

Right-click on the Internet connection via USB modem. Choose Properties.

In a new window, go to the tab Access. Check the box next to " Allow other network users...“. Then, select a connection from the list. I have, this Wireless network connection 3” Yours will be about the same, only the number may be different. Click Ok.

Now, we connect to the Internet through our USB modem. I just started the connection (double click on it) and chose Challenge.

Make sure your computer is connected to the internet.

Now, you can start the virtual Wi-Fi hotspot.

Launching HotSpot with VirtualRouter Plus

First, you need to download VirtualRouter Plus. You can do it from our website, or from the official website http://opensource.runxiadq.com/index.php/projects/virtual-router-plus.

Extract the files from the archive and run the file VirtualRouterPlus.exe.

Specify the network name, password that will be used when connecting to your access point and select the connection from which you want to distribute the Internet. There should be a USB modem connection. If it is not there, then most likely it will not work.

To start the access point, click on the Start Virtual Router Plus button.

A message will appear that the network is running.

Everything, our laptop distributes Wi-Fi.

Connect your smartphone to a virtual Wi-Fi hotspot

Turn on Wi-Fi on your phone and open the list of available networks. There, you will see the network we created, select it. A password request will appear. Enter the password you provided in VirtualRouterPlus and click To plug.

The phone should connect to the network running on the laptop. Or see more details on connecting Android devices to a wireless network.

Trying to open the site. Everything worked for me!

How to start the network again after restarting the computer?

After reboot (off/on) computer, you will only need to connect to the Internet through your modem, and launch the access point in the Virtual Router Plus program. And, you will be able to connect your devices to Wi-Fi again.

If a problem arises when everything seems to be working normally, the devices will connect, but the Internet will not work on them, then most likely your antivirus or firewall will block access to the Internet. Try disabling them completely.

And check again if Internet sharing is allowed in the properties of your connection via USB modem.

Afterword

I hope I managed to at least slightly clarify the situation with setting up HotSpot via a wireless 3G / 4G modem. If you don’t want to wrap yourself up with this, then I advise you to buy a Wi-Fi router that can take Internet from USB modems and distribute it via Wi-Fi. Tips for choosing such a router, you can find in the article.

Do you already have 3G but your friends don't? You have to work, but Wi-Fi is broken in your office, and your 3G mobile operator is alive and well? You went on vacation with a girlfriend and one 3G modem for two and are now fighting for the right to be the first to post photos on social networks? Okay, nothing to worry about, now our hero, Captain Obvious, will teach you how to share the joy of 3G with the world in all ways available to him. Moreover, in our great time, third-party services are not needed for this - mobile platforms have learned to act as a default router, and routers with 3G and Wi-Fi support have become even smarter and more convenient.

How to distribute 3G from an Android smartphone

First of all, make sure your Android smartphone is connected to 3G. To do this, you must have data transfer turned on, your smartphone must be in the network coverage area and it must have support for this communication standard (any modern mobile device already has it). If you have a dual sim device, then check that the SIM card with 3G Internet is in the slot that supports 3G. Hint - if there is a 3G icon on the status bar near the network indicator, then you should not carry out all these manipulations, let's move on. If not, look at the screenshots and do everything as in them.

Next, we go to Settings-Wireless networks-More. Depending on the device, the next item may be called differently. Someone has it "Modem mode", and someone - "Mobile Internet Sharing", "Modem and hotspot". We go into it, leave the name of the network by default or change it to our own, change or remember the password. If necessary, change the security and power settings in the advanced settings. If you want to connect another device to your 3G smartphone not via Wi-Fi, this can also be done via Mobile Internet Sharing. Finished with this smartphone.

We take the device that needs to be connected to the Internet (another smartphone, tablet, laptop, netbook), go to the Wi-Fi settings, find our network by name, enter the password (if anything, you can peep in a smartphone with 3G), enjoy the fast Internet!

How to distribute 3G from iPhone

This instruction is relevant for iPhone with iOS version 5.0 or later.

As soon as the fields are filled, you need to go up one menu item or go to the main menu. And there, and there will be a new section - "Modem mode". The mode must be activated. The intricate password iPhone will offer by default, you can change it. "Tethering mode" is available for three connection types at once: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB, and for each of them, the device provides instructions for further action. Those essentially come down to how to connect devices to each other.

How to share 3G with Windows Phone

Mobile Windows Phone is notorious for not having the most logical settings. Nevertheless, it is the configuration of the smartphone in router mode that is implemented here in the most understandable way for the uninitiated user of all mobile operating systems. For starters, you still need to make sure that your mobile device is connected to a 3G network. If the coveted icon is not lit on the status bar, then you need to follow this path: Settings-Data transfer. We check that it is “on” here, and the fastest network is 3G.

Next, you should go back one menu item and go to "Shared Internet". Turn on "General access" and set up the network on your mobile device (name and password). Everything is ready, now you can search for it from a laptop or other mobile Internet and enjoy high-speed access.

How to distribute 3G from a laptop on Windows 7 or 8

If you have a 3G modem and a Windows laptop on hand, and there are more than one who want to join the Internet, then this part of the article is for you. You can go two ways: install third-party software or set up Wi-Fi without it. We recommend the second one. Again, there are two scenarios here. The first is to use the command line (it's not at all scary that you are), the second is a little longer, but does not look so intimidating for beginners. In any case, now you need to memorize this phrase with all the correct punctuation marks:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid="Wi-Fi" key="password" keyUsage=persistent

where Wi-Fi is the name of the network, you can put any of your own, and password is the password, it should also be changed.

Those who decide to hack into the Internet network through the command line should run the "Command Prompt" as an administrator. If you have Windows 7, then most likely you have it in the Start menu. If not, then it is easily found by searching for cmd or "Command Prompt". If you have Windows 8, then you need to right-click on the Windows icon on the desktop, select "Command Prompt (Administrator").

The memorized phrase must be entered in the window that opens and press Enter. Or use the "Copy" and "Paste" functions. The command line will notify you of the success of the operation with such a message.

Those who decide to do without the command line need to copy the same phrase, create a new text document and paste it into it. You can name the document whatever you want, but in the extension, instead of .txt, specify .bat so that Windows perceives it as a batch file. Next, you need to right-click on this file and run it as administrator. The effect will be the same.

Next, to configure the general Internet, you need to follow the following path: Network and Sharing Center(the fastest way to get here is to right-click on the internet connection icon) -Change adapter settings. In the menu that opens, see that “Wireless Connection 2” has appeared (most likely Windows will call it that if you did not manage to create any other unnamed wireless connections earlier).

After performing these simple manipulations, you again need to get to the Network and Sharing Center-Wireless Network Management-Wireless Connection 2-Properties-Sharing and check the box "Allow other network users to use this computer's connection to access the Internet."

To start the created network, you need to repeat the manipulations with the "Command line" or the creation of a batch file, as described above. Now you need to use the following text:

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Ready! You can connect to the network from another device.

How to distribute 3G through a router

Those who live in the private sector (or went to the country in the summer) and do not have a fixed Internet connection can solve the problem of high-speed Internet access via 3G for the whole family. To do this, you can either purchase a regular Wi-Fi router that allows you to connect a 3G modem via USB. Or a compact Wi-Fi router with a SIM card slot, which is even easier to work with. Fortunately, both types of devices are no longer uncommon. The first type of WI-Fi router is suitable for those for whom a 3G modem will not be the only source of Internet connection. The second is suitable for those who need maximum portability, the ability to charge not only through a wall outlet, and definitely do not need Ethernet. Often, inexpensive 3G Wi-Fi routers have a limit of 5 users, if you need more (and you definitely need to!), This should be taken into account when choosing, and understand that you will have to pay extra for more comfortable work.

First, we will talk about setting up a Wi-Fi router with USB. To do this, you need to connect the router to the electrical network, make sure that all previous settings are reset (long pressing the reset key will do this), insert the modem into USB and wait until it blinks in response.

Next, you need to connect to the open Wi-Fi network of the router (it should be called as the model of the router) and go from a laptop, smartphone or tablet to the page 192.168.0.1 (or it can also be 192.168.1.1, usually the IP address is indicated on the router itself ) through a browser. Usually, it is recommended to use a wired connection and Internet Explorer for these purposes, but with a high degree of probability, you will succeed both through Wi-Fi and through any other browser. The router will meet you with a standard authorization interface, which will differ slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but in general it will look something like this.

To get into the router settings, in the fields that appear, enter the admin login and admin password, if your router does not have other settings specified. Further, depending on the manufacturer of the router, events may develop in different ways, but in the end you need to find the “Connection Type” in the menu. In some routers, you need to go into the manual settings of the Internet connection, in others, you need to install your firmware version from the operator's website. For others (for example, ASUS), the 3G modem connection is configured in the "USB connection" item. The paths are different, but the result is the same - you need to set "3G" in the connection type.

If you have a 3G Wi-Fi router, then no additional tricks are needed - just turn on the router, find its network, enter the login and password received along with the operator card, and use it. Such a router can act as a modem when connected to a computer via USB (for example, while charging), without losing the ability to distribute Wi-Fi.

How to Share 3G with Macbook

To make your Internet access (which you, for example, received from your 3G modem connected via Bluetooth) shared on your Macbook, you should go to the system settings and follow this path: Sharing-Shared Internet and select the type of connection in the window that opens. Then configure the network name, security, channel and password. After configuring these parameters, check the box next to "Shared Internet" and you're done.

Hi friends. For several days I did not write anything, I was busy with physical labor from morning to evening. I only had enough strength to respond to comments :).

I had a need to organize the distribution of the Internet from 3G via Wi-Fi and now I want to tell you how this can be done so that everything works and even flies :).

There will be no specifics in this article, since I have not bought the equipment yet, and I will write about setting up this circuit in the near future. And now we'll just look at how you can distribute the Internet from a 3G modem using Wi-Fi technology. This, of course, is not very important, but I use the Intertelecom Internet and will distribute it. By the way, I wrote about setting up a modem from Intertelecom in an article. If you use the Internet using 3G technology, or even 4G, then there are probably two options by which you can distribute this Internet over a wireless Wi-Fi network.

How to distribute 3G Internet over Wi-Fi?

First way. You can buy a regular Wi-Fi router that supports the technology USB 3G. This means that you can connect our modem to the router and it will distribute the Internet from it. The advantages of this method are that you will get a full-fledged wireless network and even the ability to distribute the Internet via LAN. You can connect many devices via Wi-Fi and the coverage area from the router will be large compared to the second method. Yes, and it's cheaper.

The second way. Modem with built-in Wi-Fi module. This is a device that wakes up to receive a 3G signal and distribute it via Wi-Fi. The main advantage of these devices is portability. They have a built-in battery that can provide an average of 4-6 hours of operation when connecting one device. One of the minuses is the ability to connect usually up to 5 devices and a range of about 10 meters. But Wi-Fi is always with you.

If you need mobility, that is, you need a device that will distribute 3G Internet via Wi-Fi somewhere on the street, in a car, etc., then you can buy a modem with a built-in Wi-Fi module.

Well, if you need the Internet for your home, like me, and you don’t plan to carry it around with you, then you can buy a regular Wi-Fi router, set it up once and forget it.

How will I do?

I have a modem Novatel U720, old true, but works well. I looked after myself for an inexpensive and good router. Since my modem is old, I understand that problems may arise when setting up the router. Decided to check, asked Google a query “Novatel U720 and TL-MR3220”. I opened several forums and realized that if your modem is not in the list of modems that the router supports, then this is all solved by a simple router firmware. And there are many third-party firmware. But as it turned out, my modem is also supported on the latest official firmware.

If you want to buy a router and connect a 3G modem to it, then look at the official website of the router to see if your modem is on the list of supported ones, otherwise there may be configuration problems.

Why did I choose TP-LINK TL-MR3220? Inexpensive router with good reviews, also TP-LINK, I really like this company, even such budget devices work perfectly. And they look good :).

In general terms, the connection scheme is very simple. We connect the modem to the router, set up the router and you're done. You can connect devices via Wi-Fi. Of course, there are many nuances, such as: speed, equipment compatibility, etc. But we will consider these issues in the article when I write about the technical part, about setting up the router. Good luck!

Update

Prepared two detailed instructions on setting up routers to work with 3G modems. Perhaps someone will come in handy.
